The Concept

Books may be fading, but they reemerge

The Artist

The Library Series explores how books slowly fade as repositories of history and tradition. For centuries, books used to express and conserve culture, but now they are increasingly replaced by purely digital media. Marianne Lévai takes books she considers relevant or not and renders them illegible by sealing them in encaustic medium. Then she attaches natural or man-made objects to them, thereby adding scientific, symbolic, and poetic meaning. Thus the partially hidden book is enhanced with significance. In her endeavor to instill new life into the books the artist tries to meld social content relationships with purely personal associations.
